CLUB HISTORY
Club History (30/12/08)

Stoke are one of the most successful local clubs in recent years and run teams from Under 8's to Under 16's including a Girls Team in the Junior Section. Our First Team play in the South West Penninsula League East, a Reserve Team in the South Devon League Division two and a Third team in Division four.

Formed in the early 1900's, Stoke Gabriel Foootball Club had relied on the generosity of local farmers to provide a ground during which the changing rooms remained in the village where both the schoolroom and an old army hut were utilised.

In 1981 the club purchased land in Broadley Lane and developed a sloping field into our current home, the G.J. Churchward Memorial Ground, named in honour of the Great Western Railway Chief Engineer who was born in Stoke Gabriel. The ground was officially opened in 1984 with a visit from Torquay United.

The opening of the new ground conincided with the most successful era of the club during which the South Devon League Premier Division, the Herald Cup, and the George Belli Cup were won. We became founder members of the Devon League in 1992 and since this time have secured the League Championship twice (94-95 & 96-97)Runners Up twice, the Devon Premier Cup (93-94) and the Throgmorton Cup (97-98) and in 1993 the youth team won the Devon Cup. These honours placed Stoke Gabriel at the top of local amateur football.

In 2008 we secured another full size pitch within 5 mins walk from Broadley Lane, this in turn we were granted planning permission to build a New Club house and changing facilities starting in 2009. Plans are in place to expand our Mini soccer pitches by securing adjoining land next to the main pitch at Broadley Lane.

As well as our all-weather ground in Broadley Lane, we have excellent changing facilities, a tea hut and a licensed bar where the members of the club enjoy an active social life.
